What is a blockchain?
Cryptocurrencies work using a technology called a blockchain. A blockchain is a decentralized ledger (official record) technology spread across many computers (nodes) that manages and records transactions leveraging cryptography.
You may think of a specific blockchain's ledger like a publically viewable bank. When you deposit your paycheck the bank takes note that your check was deposited. But on the blockchain, all the nodes determine whether or not you actually did deposit that and what gets added to the ledger. When consensus is reached that “block” or list of transactions, is recorded, usually publicly, and is immutable. Meaning no one node can go rogue and change a transaction because it requires the block to both be the active block, and form a consensus as to what you actually deposited.
